two new places in Decatur are on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage

We are excited to say two new places in Decatur are on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage highlighting local buildings with historic significance!

First Presbyterian Church

First to make the list is Decatur’s First Presbyterian Church. The church was originally erected on the southeast corner of Bank Street and Church Street in 1853.

It was a plastered, painted single-story structure with a brick foundation. Services were disrupted by the Civil War. Eventually, the church was dismantled by the Union Army.

However, by 1873, a small frame church was rebuilt! Today, the structure has changed, but the site remains the same.

In 1953 the current sanctuary was built along with an addition in 1978. It was designed by well-known Alabama architect Horace Miller Weaver.

You can visit First Presbyterian Church located at 701 Oak St. Northeast during Sunday services at 10:30 a.m.

Wyatt-Malone Building

Next, the other newest addition to the register is the Wyatt-Malone Building.

Ironically, though two new places in Decatur are on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, one didn’t start out in the city limits.

In fact, the Wyatt-Malone building was built in 1920 in the town of Albany, Ala. Annexed into the city limits of Decatur in 1927,

the building housed a variety of retail businesses from that time until 1963.

By 1964, it was converted into office space by Chenault & Chenault Attorneys. Currently, it is still primarily used as attorney offices by Chenault Hammond, P.C. located at 117 Second Ave. Northeast.
